How to sniff packets (Why you should use a VPN)

Packet sniffing is an easy to learn method of capturing and analyzing data in places like your local Sbux and other places with free Wifi. Here is an easy to use packet sniffing guide from the VICE mag subsection, Motherboard.

VPN

Wirecutter has a good write up and review of VPN providers.

Using a VPN is an easy (but incomplete) step to securely exchange info and browse online, particularly with public WiFi.

Not all VPNs are created equal, and some are more trustworthy than others. The Wirecutter article explains several factors to be mindful of when choosing a VPN.

Tracking and AD blocking

DisConnect

UBlock Origin
  • "Technology websites and user reviews for uBlock Origin have regarded the extension as less resource intensive than extensions that provide similar feature sets such as Adblock Plus."

Java-Script default blocking w/ white lists

  • No-Script Suite Lite provides an extra security for your Browser (Firefox, Chrome, and Opera). It allows JavaScript (inline & external) to be executed only by trusted websites of your choice. Some websites are added to the white-list by default, but you can add or remove items at any time.
  • This disrupts the functionality of a lot of websites. The extension button for this app in chrome makes it super easy to white list trusted websites. But, if you are shopping online and visit a lot of new flash-y stores (each with a different domain) you will have to white list a lot of apps.

Blocking useless, yet high ranking, search results in Google

  • Block search results you don't need from domains/hosts like digital trends, techradar, trusted reviews, forbes, and laptopmag.
